Vinyl Deck Warranty Explained: What It Covers, What Voids It

Updated August 12, 2026 7 min read

A vinyl deck warranty covers manufacturing defects in the membrane, not the work of installing it. Valordek covers both product lines for 15 years on waterproofing and 5 years on appearance. Installation workmanship is warrantied separately by the contractor. Understanding that split is the difference between a claim that succeeds and one that goes nowhere.

Almost every warranty dispute in this industry comes down to that one distinction. A homeowner sees water and assumes the manufacturer is responsible for whatever caused it. In reality there are two warranties, from two different parties, covering two different things: the material and the labour. A membrane can be entirely free of defects and the deck can still leak, because the leak came from how it was fitted rather than what it was made of. Our full published terms live on the Valordek warranty page, and this guide explains what those terms mean in practice.

What a vinyl deck warranty actually covers

Valordek warranties cover manufacturing defects that cause leaks, and the waterproofing integrity of the vinyl membrane itself. Both product lines carry identical coverage: 15 years waterproofing and 5 years appearance, on 68mil Fuzzy-Back Premium Series and 60mil Smooth-Back Ultra Series alike.

That parity is worth noting, because it is not the industry norm. Warranty terms in vinyl decking vary by product line at several manufacturers, and coverage of 10 years still appears on competing product documentation currently in circulation. When comparing quotes, compare the actual term on the actual product being installed, not the number in the brochure headline.

The two warranties: material and installation

A finished vinyl deck is covered by two separate promises, and they are not interchangeable. The manufacturer warrants that the membrane is free of defects. The installing contractor warrants that it was fitted correctly. Valordek's published terms state this directly: installation workmanship is the independent contractor's liability.

This matters because the large majority of deck failures are workmanship failures, not material failures. A membrane that was bonded to a damp substrate, terminated too low at the wall, or drilled through after the fact will leak regardless of how good the vinyl is. Those are all installation questions.

What went wrongWhose warranty appliesTypical example
The membrane itself is defectiveManufacturer (Valordek, 15 years)A manufacturing flaw in the sheet that lets water through
The membrane was fitted incorrectlyInstalling contractorReversed flashing laps, inadequate upturn, poor substrate prep
The structure underneath movedNeither, generallySettling, warping, or subfloor problems
Routine maintenance was skippedHomeownerSealant left uninspected until it cracked open

The practical takeaway is to ask for both warranties in writing before work starts, and to be clear which party you would be calling in each scenario. A contractor who cannot explain their own labour warranty is telling you something useful.

What voids a vinyl deck warranty

Valordek coverage is valid only when the product has been installed by a certified installer using Valordek-approved adhesives and system components. That is the single most important condition, and it is the one most often discovered too late. Beyond it, the published terms exclude:

  • Improper installation, abuse, or misuse. The membrane is warrantied as a waterproofing product used as intended, not against damage inflicted on it.
  • Natural fading, discolouration, or wear. Every outdoor surface weathers. That is what the separate 5-year appearance term addresses, and why it runs shorter than the waterproofing term.
  • Sub-structure issues such as settling, warping, or subfloor problems. The membrane waterproofs the structure. It does not hold it up, and it cannot compensate for a substrate that moves.
  • Sealant failure that requires annual homeowner maintenance. Sealant is a consumable with a shorter service life than the membrane. Keeping it sound is an owner responsibility.
  • Installation workmanship, which sits with the contractor as described above.

None of this is unusual for a building product, but reading it before a problem arises changes what you ask for at quoting stage.

Why the certified installer requirement is not fine print

Using a certified installer is not a formality that protects the manufacturer. It is the condition that makes the 15-year term meaningful, because the failure modes that actually sink decks are all installation decisions made in the first two days of work and hidden forever afterwards.

Substrate preparation, slope, flashing laps, termination height at walls and door sills, and how railing penetrations are detailed are all invisible once the deck is finished. Two decks can look identical on handover and behave completely differently in year four. That is why wall terminations and railing post penetrations account for so many leaks while the open field almost never fails.

Valordek's network of 17 authorized dealers across Western Canada exists for this reason. Installation through an authorized dealer is what keeps the coverage intact, and it is also the practical answer to who you call if something does go wrong.

Waterproofing and appearance run on two different clocks

The 15-year waterproofing term and the 5-year appearance term cover genuinely different things, and conflating them causes avoidable disappointment.

Waterproofing coverage is about performance: does the membrane keep water out. Appearance coverage is about how it looks, and it is shorter because outdoor surfaces are exposed to UV, temperature swing from -40C to 80C, foot traffic, and whatever gets dropped on them. A deck at year eight that is fully watertight but visibly weathered is behaving exactly as the warranty describes.

Most appearance complaints are not warranty matters at all. They are maintenance ones, and they are preventable. Our cleaning guide and seasonal care guide cover what actually marks a vinyl surface, including the rubber-backed outdoor rugs that leave permanent staining no cleaning will lift.

How to make a warranty claim

Valordek claims are submitted in writing. Include your name, address and phone number, your proof of purchase, and a description of the problem, and send it to Valordek at 17514 55B Avenue, Surrey, BC V3S 7G6. The complete terms are available as a PDF from the warranty page.

Two things make a claim go faster. Keep your proof of purchase and the name of the installing dealer together somewhere you will find them in a decade, because that pairing establishes both warranties at once. And document the problem early with dated photographs, particularly for an intermittent leak, since a stain that only appears in driven rain is much easier to demonstrate with a record than a description. If you are not yet sure whether what you are seeing is a defect, our repair guide covers how to tell.

Frequently asked questions

What does a vinyl deck warranty cover?

It covers manufacturing defects in the membrane that cause leaks, plus the waterproofing integrity of the vinyl itself. Valordek covers both product lines for 15 years on waterproofing and 5 years on appearance. It does not cover installation workmanship, which is warrantied separately by the installing contractor.

What voids a vinyl deck warranty?

Installation by someone other than a certified installer, or use of adhesives and components that are not Valordek-approved, are the main ones. Coverage also excludes improper installation, abuse or misuse, natural fading and wear, sub-structure movement, and sealant failure that annual maintenance would have prevented.

What is the difference between a material warranty and a labour warranty?

The material warranty comes from the manufacturer and covers defects in the product. The labour warranty comes from the installing contractor and covers the quality of the work. Most deck failures are workmanship failures rather than material failures, so both matter. Ask for each in writing before work begins.

Does a vinyl deck warranty cover fading?

Not under waterproofing coverage. Natural fading, discolouration and wear are explicitly excluded, which is what the separate 5-year appearance term addresses. A membrane can be visibly weathered and still fully within its 15-year waterproofing coverage, because the two terms measure different things.

Do you need a certified installer to keep the warranty valid?

Yes. Valordek coverage is valid only when the product is installed by a certified installer using Valordek-approved adhesives and system components. This is not a formality. The failure modes that sink decks are installation decisions made early and hidden once the deck is finished.

How long should a vinyl deck last?

A properly installed vinyl membrane is engineered to outlast its 15-year waterproofing term, and Valordek membranes are rated for continuous service from -40C to 80C. Lifespan depends far more on installation quality and routine maintenance than on the material, which is why installer selection matters as much as product selection.
