How vinyl decking works

One continuous waterproof surface.

Vinyl decking isn't paint, coating, or composite boards. It's a single PVC sheet that bonds to your existing deck. Here's the three-step build.

1

A heat-welded PVC membrane

Instead of paint that cracks or boards that gap, vinyl decking is a single sheet of UV-stable PVC. Where two courses meet, we heat-weld them into one continuous piece — no joints to fail.

2

Bonded with contact adhesive

The membrane bonds full-coverage to your existing plywood or concrete substrate. No fasteners, no air gaps, no places for water to pool underneath.

3

Anchored with drip flashing

PVC drip flashing wraps the perimeter and seals every wall junction and drain. Water has nowhere to enter — and a clear path to leave.

Installation

Built to be installable.

Most balconies are a weekend project for a comfortable DIYer. Rooftop decks need a certified installer because of the heat-welded PVC flashing and fire-rated requirements.

DIY-friendly

Balconies (Fuzzy-Back)

Most homeowners can install Fuzzy-Back vinyl over plywood or concrete in a weekend. Contact adhesive bonds the membrane to the substrate, then heat-welded seams join each course. The only specialist tool is a heat welder — rentable for around $55/day.

Pro-installed

Rooftop decks (Smooth-Back)

Smooth-Back installs must be done by a Valordek-certified installer to maintain the 15-year warranty + Class A & C fire rating. PVC drip flashing is heat-welded to the membrane at every wall, drain, and edge for continuous coverage.

Questions we get

Vinyl decking FAQ.

What is vinyl decking?

Vinyl decking is a heat-welded PVC membrane that bonds directly to your deck surface. Unlike paint, coatings, or composite boards, it's a single continuous sheet of waterproof material — welded together at the seams and anchored at the edges with PVC drip flashing. It turns balconies and rooftop decks into watertight, walkable outdoor spaces.

Is vinyl decking waterproof?

Yes — that's its core purpose. The PVC membrane is heat-welded at every seam, bonded full-coverage to your substrate, and sealed at the perimeter with drip flashing. There are no caulk lines, no fastener penetrations, and no gaps. Valordek vinyl is certified to Canadian code (CCMC) for waterproof use over living spaces.

How long does vinyl decking last?

Valordek's Fuzzy-Back vinyl carries a 10-year waterproofing warranty plus 5 years on appearance. Smooth-Back (for rooftops) carries a 15-year waterproofing warranty. Real-world installs routinely last 20+ years when properly maintained — the UV-stable PVC doesn't degrade in sun, freeze-thaw cycles, or normal foot traffic. Read the full warranty terms.

Can you put vinyl decking over wood?

Yes — most installations go directly over an existing plywood substrate. The plywood needs to be structurally sound (no rot or significant damage) and properly prepped. If areas of the deck are deteriorated, those need to be replaced before the membrane goes down. Read more about the full installation system.

Is vinyl decking slippery?

No more than most outdoor decking surfaces. Valordek's textured finishes (Wood Look plank patterns, Stone Look aggregate) provide grip in dry and wet conditions. If your deck gets heavy seasonal use or has accessibility requirements, talk to a Valordek dealer about non-slip options.

How much does vinyl decking cost?

Valordek vinyl starts at $3.74 per square foot for materials. Total project cost depends on deck size, condition of the existing surface, accessories needed (adhesive, drip flashing, U-Lock clips), and whether you hire a professional installer. Use our cost calculator for an instant estimate based on your dimensions.

Do I need a professional installer?

For balconies with Fuzzy-Back vinyl: many homeowners install it themselves. The membrane + contact adhesive + flashing system is straightforward for someone comfortable with home projects — browse the accessories and tools you'll need. For rooftop decks with Smooth-Back (which requires heat-welded PVC flashing and Class A fire rating), installation must be done by a Valordek-certified installer to maintain the 15-year warranty.
